Concert Choir

Concert Choir is an advanced choir that demonstrates a high level of vocal and sight-singing abilities needed to learn and perform sophisticated literature of multi-part harmonies, languages, styles, and textures. Singers generally come to Concert Choir after spending time in our preparatory level choirs, but on occasion, directors will invite accomplished choral singers who are new to the Princeton Girlchoir organization. This choir masters and presents choral repertoire of many different styles, languages and cultures. Singers remain in Concert Choir for one to four years.

A summer tour is also part of the Concert Choir experience, and recent tours have taken the Choir to Austria, The Czech Republic, Ireland, Oregon, Italy, France, Spain, England, Germany, Newfoundland, and Hawaii. The Concert Choir has undertaken solo performance tours, and has also joined some of the world’s leading children’s choir directors for festival appearances. Visit our Tours page to see past summer tour locations.

To advance to Concert Choir, singers should demonstrate:

  • Negotiating all aspects of the voice with register consistency, resonance and placement
  • Advanced music reading skill
    • Reading more complex melodies (with Perfect 4ths, 5ths & octave; major & minor 6ths and 7ths)
    • Reading more complex rhythms (dotted notes & rests)
    • Reading and singing melodies using triple meter
  • An understanding of dynamics and phrase markings when performing
  • Musicianship and vocal abilities required for Semi-Tones

Time commitment expectations for all Concert Choir choristers include:

  • 2 ¼ hour weekly rehearsals on Mondays
  • retreats (generally 2 Saturday afternoons per year)
  • dress and pre-concert rehearsals
  • winter and spring concerts
  • guest performances

Additional performance opportunities always arise during the year.

Concert Choir members may also audition for the select PGC Ensemble, a smaller group that specializes in chamber repertoire and performs more frequently during the season.

Concert Choir is conducted by Artistic Director Dr. Lynnel Joy Jenkins.
